2018 Major League Baseball All-Star Game
The Midsummer Classic is Americana at its finest. First held on July 6, 1933 as part of the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game was intended to be a one-time event. The success and popularity of the All-Star game turned it into an annual baseball tradition.
MLB All-Star Game 2018
The 2018 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be held on July 17 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The 89th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be the fifth All-Star Game in Washington, D.C. The 2018 All-Star Game managers will be Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers and A.J. Hinch of the Houston Astros.
Choosing the Teams
Just like every year since 1934, the managers of the previous year’s league pennant winners are the managers of the game, who in turn select the coaching staff. The managers, not the teams, are given the honor, which means the All-Star managers could be with a different team than the team with which they won. They may not be actively managing a team at all.
As for the roster, balloting began on May 1 and ended July 7. Complete rosters can be found at MLB.com along with detailed information on events surrounding the game.
Star-Studded Events
In addition to the All-Star Game itself, the Midsummer Classic includes a Home Run Derby, the All-Star Futures Game and the All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game. Visit MLB.com for a complete schedule and information on these All-Star events.
Bonus Trivia
The ESPY Awards Ceremony is held on the Wednesday after the MLB All-Star Game. Why? There are no major North American professional league games scheduled for that day. The NBA, NFL and NHL are not in season, the MLB has no games scheduled that day and college sports are on summer vacation.
